More Monty controversy

I know this will cause argument, but I feel some fairness is required.
This is a GW. film of Monty growing Dahlia seeds, and stating they do flower in the first year

Did you see him planting "sedums" last week with the compost level 1" above the rim of the pot?

Also in a sense of fairness, I don't recall anyone saying 100%that he said  they didn't. Someone said something along the lines of " I seem to remember him saying they didn't" .

Fair comment, Hosta, but that was picked up on, as everything Monty says is wrong.
I am just defending the "underdog", who I also happen to believe, is one of the great communicators on gardening matters, currently available.
I know you, and others disagree, but a good argument between friends, is always a pleasure [ to me at least ]

It's like a good pub conversation ... we can disagree as long as we keep buying our rounds

Do you remember many years ago there used to be basic DIY programmes a bit like Delia cookery programmes but for novice DIYers instead?
Why don't they have a basic, this  a flowerpot, this is a trowel, this is a packet of seeds programme? I'm sure one of the GC chains could sponsor it.
Then Gardner's World programme could then do what it does best. I'll leave those with strong opinions to decide what that is.

I loved Barry Bucknell, just to have an idea and it appears in the real world and he went, painstakingly, through every step. Maybe my age but I'm thinking the world goes too fast these days - bit like driving instead of walking.

I need to see how things grow to get my head round their cultivation, especially vegetables which can be dainty and refined or just huge and rumbustious. I would love it if there was 15mins on GW showing what various common plants do and become. Maybe part of that could be an explanation of how to use the different types of hoe (that one took me years) or secateurs (still haven't quite got that one) it was one of the many reasons I liked Geoff H so much.

Monty is lovely but needs a more practical sidekick to complement his beautiful, aesthetic. descriptive gardening.

I watch Beechgrove for the practical stuff @herbaceous, and GW for a nosey at pretty stuff in the garden visits they show.
I probably learn more about gardening from reading this forum tbh 😊.

I can never understand why people sow two seeds together and throw one away, do they germinate better if they have company?

In my case @Lyn its because 1) I expect them to fail, 2) it saves on compost - 4 seeds would be my ideal and 3) sometimes I just can't see the little devils properly. But I can't bear to throw any away  :)

Sowed some flower seeds this year, decided I have to do better with garden flowers, must have had one or two from first sowing stuck to my hand 'cos guess what?

Just checked out Beechgrove and added it to my hit list! Does it make much difference that its the other end of the country from me?
