Dahlias from seed query.

AnniDAnniD Posts: 12,585
I grew some mixed dahlias from seed and planted them out a few weeks ago.  I gave some spare ones to my neighbour, and a week or so later he told me he'd seen Monty on GW saying that dahlias grown from seed don't flower in the first year.  Is this true? I'm sure l grew some several years ago and they did flower the same year.

They can flower in their first year, if thet were sown early enough.

Thanks @punkdoc, if memory serves, they were sown end of March, beginning of April, certainly no later than 13th April. Would that be early enough ?

That’s the perfect time to sow, and they will flower in the first year, what’s more they make big tubers that you can over winter and start of again next year.

I sowed my Bishops Children seed on 30th March this year, and they're just coming into flower-

I've grown them from seed each year for several years and they always flower.
    Maybe some varieties take longer

Or maybe Monty was just wrong, again.

I’ve grow alsorts from seeds, (except liquorice ones)  they’ve all flowered first year and made tubers for next.

Or maybe he didn't say it at all.

I've watched every episode and I'm sure I would have noted if Monty had said such a thing. I used to grow them from seed some 50 yrs ago and they flowered the same year then too.
I imagine if you're wanting 6ft cactus dahlias from seed, they may take longer
