Yes I've heard that as well, but the one year I did it, it didn't do well. That may have been for other reasons to do with the weather that particular year, of course. But I've had more consistent success planting it earlier. Maybe the shortest day is the right time to plant it in Spain

Hallowe'en sounds like a good plan - with a handy cultural reference. I like that sort of thing - very fond of Stir Up Sunday for Christmas puddings - which is probably why the shortest day stuck in my mind. Gives plenty of time to grow other things beforehand too.
I assume the timing is the same for elephant garlic? I quite fancy growing that.

September because I was told September, and it works for me. Out in July. I don’t buy any more, just replant, though I did buy elephant garlic for the first time this season. I must admit to growing too much, and had to freeze and keep in oil last time. All onion family do very well here, probably as voles aren’t interested.
October still winning, but September and November are catching up. January and February are coming in from the outside, but December (when I thought you were supposed to plant it, and when i did ) doesn't get a single vote. Ha!
