Thanks, Bob. I was looking at the layering but it seemed that the stems were actually breaking as I tried to bend them down into the pot. Hopefully, my fingers are as green as yours are if I try just using the pruned bits!
Some gooseberry varieties have a more 'horizontal' habit and lend themselves to layering ... my Hinnomaki Gold layers itself without help from me
'Captivator' has a more upright growth habit so wouldn't lend itself to layering so easily ... also it's virtually thornless, mildew resistant and is said to have a good flavour ... I may try one of these in the future.

Lost the label, Dove, so I don't know what variety they are...but they are certainly 'upright' (and tasty...although this year something got at them and not all of the fruit were left when it came to harvesting, despite being well netted). As their new home is bigger, I'll probably get a couple more and some raspberries. M-m-m (just thinking of next year's crop:) )
