Fragrance

MrsGardenMrsGarden Posts: 3,951
Anyone else noticed that their fragrant flowers are not as fragrant this year?
I think Joe Swift mentioned it on GW or Hampton FS, that moisture brings out the smell, and as it's been so dry these last few months the fragrances are struggling.
My phyladephila was much weaker and now the phlox isn't making the nostril stage as it did in previous years.
Or is it the age of the plants, or my sense of smell??
Interested in your thoughts.

No smell from my Phlox either, my Philadephus have come and gone and didn’t notice, I have some Nemesia in baskets that smells nice.  No smell on roses.

Not much smell from roses and very little from sweet peas.

We had some rain the other night. The honeysuckle smell has been poor this year, but this morning the honey smell of buddleja was really strong.

My old English rose was as fragrant as ever as were the lilies and nicotiana now. I had hardly any scent from the two honeysuckles though.

Maybe it depends what the plants are growing on.

Yesterday I was hit by a smell - I wondered what it was then I realised i had disturbed a phlox. This evening my giant lilies are filling the air with magic. I can smell them in my living room now, its nearly 10pm. My tomatoes smell real good and veggy too.

Monardas, mints, basil are giving some fragrance, but not much.

Even my zaluxianskya didn't smell much earlier in the year and that usually knocks my head off!

I think the plants may need moist air to carry their perfumes on the air, and we have not had much moist air.
