Echinacea plant

Having spent all weekend warning my footie-mad nephew to mind the new flowers forming on my echinaceas, I come out to find this this morning! Could it be a hungry pigeon...?

They did better than mine. The slugs had them when they came through the soil.

Come to think of it where did my Echinacea go?? The beast from the east perhaps?  :|

Op - I don't think it was a pigeon. I have a lot of wood pigeons and collared doves and they don't touch the plants. I'm afraid that looks like physical damage, probably the football  :/

I was lucky with the echinacea this year, they are lovely and survived the beast. I think your plant will be fine and come up next year. You might be lucky and get some side shoots take over.

Ive got two plants in there and this is their second year, loads more blooms this year

Are they list completely? I would have thought there would be some sign if growth even if the slugs got them. It's a shame they didn't appear  :(

Hmmmm... not sure it was the football, as the nephew went on Sunday and when I watered last night it was still intact... I have ordered some more though (Delicious Candy, really zingy pink ones), as I saw LOADS at Hampton Court FS this year, and they looked stunning (... as do yours, @Bijdezee). I have one plant with loads of flowers just forming right next to the one that's been decapitated. I'll keep an eye on it...

My order has arrived! Excellent service from Grasslands Nurseries, and the plants (6 x echinacea Delicious Candy) look good and strong...

After years of trying, I have only ever seen one flower. I grow from seed, the seedlings do fine but it's very tough for me to get the plant's to overwinter in the ground, despite mild winters.
I think these plants are tough to grow

Oooh... thanks for the warning @ZeroZero1! The ones I put in last year all came up, so I thought I'd put some more in... fingers crossed...
