Nicotiana Lime Green - not the same as Sarah Ravens

hello all,
I like to follow Sarah Raven and Monty Don on Instagram and enjoy looking at their gardens /plants for inspiration.
Ive just seen a pic of Nicotiana Lime Green on Sarah’s site but it doesn’t look like any of mine grown from Sarah Raven seeds. Has anyone else grown them? Can we compare? Maybe it’s something to do with how I sowed the seed???
I contacted Sarah Raven’s website who told me that the pic was taken last September and mine will get bigger but I don’t think so. I think that the plant will get bigger but I don’t think the flowers will change shape.  (mine are small ones 🙄 ) thank you

Soil type and growing conditions impact on plants as does this dry spell, nigh on everything in my newly planted garden is much smaller than it's supposed to be at this time of year

I’ve grown them in the past, don’t like them much, but flowers are never like the pictures on the packet, all been through a photo shot site first. Joking aside, they will get bigger, if you cut the flowers of as soon as they start to wilt,  did you pick the middles out when they were small?

  • I did punch them out and they have multiple stems but it’s the size, shape  and colour of the flower that I’m not too keen on. Love the Sarah Raven type tho. 🤨
  • Lol *pinch

Try punching them out next time gardenlily - perhaps you'll get a better result! :D
As Lyn says - flower pix are no different to so many other things, and get 'tweaked' in an often ridiculous way.
I think it's quite misleading for people who want a particular colour, but then again, personal climate and conditions have a bearing too, as K67 said.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you everyone - I had never thought of plant photos being tweaked. If true, it’s very misleading and shouldn’t be allowed to happen - it’s flower fraud!  :p
  • I'll add Sara Raven's Helianthus 'Ms Mars' to that!  The site photos show a rather pretty deep pink/cream outer edges petals.  They are in fact a dull brownish purple with dirty mustard coloured petal tips.   To add insult to injury, the whole plant is ugly too.  Its saving grace is that it is so dull, you hardly register its presence.

Like the blue roses, or even the multi colour roses.
Then there’s the Buddlias in three colours on one plant, actually it’s just 3 tiny plants in one pot.
Lots of skullduggery around in the plant retail business.

  • Hmph I’ve just had a look at Ms Mars and you’re not the only one who is disappointed- a reviewer wrote ‘...it wasn't even a pinky colour - which was what attracted me to this unusual sunflower in the first place! Mine has come out a rather dull faded mustard!‘
    Skullduggery indeed!
  • I’ve had a similar issue with Sarah Raven dahlias... ‘Julie One’ on the website looks quite different to what I’ve ended up with! 😂
