As an update, I have taken my (wireless) bell chime off the wall and I put it on the window sill when I'm out in the garden and expecting a caller. It's a simple, easy fix. Thanks for that.

We were staying in a place in Scotland recently where the owners leave their keys in the car and never seem to lock doors.  We did not follow their example.

I would in a heart beat if I could.
  • When I was a kid, everyone in our terraced Lancashire street left front and back doors open all day so that neighbours and friends could just walk in. At dusk, the local bobby opened everyone's door in turn and shouted in "It's going dark, get the kids in and don't forget to lock up soon" Aahh!

I've lived in places like that recently and I do miss it. Where I live in London, the neighbours have each others' keys and we're in and out of each others houses every day, but it's not quite the same.
  • I had the same issue, couldn’t hear the bell, or if I did, couldn’t reach the front door in timw
bought a “Ring’ doorbell, installed it myself. Links to my phone so that’s what rings
It also allows me to talk to postman to say I’m coming, or to tell him where to leave stuff if I’m out- that frightened the life out of him the first time
as a bonus, it has a camera too

I left my front door  wide open  a couple of years ago.
Neighbours both sides went in to see if we'd been burgled. They told us that they knew we hadn't as the laptop was still there.
However, the state of the place would have given them reason to suspect it might have been
Note to self: tidy house before forgetting to close front door.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I just stick a little wooden sign on the door that says 'I'm in the garden' -  :)

That's not much use if I can't hear the doorbell and am waiting for a delivery.
