Help! Is my grape tree dying?

It's dying of thirst ... a vine with that much foliage needs gallons and gallons of water to sustain it, particularly in the hot weather with drying winds that we've had recently.

In that situation it's not even possible for you to water it properly ... my grape vine is planted in the open ground against a trellis, is pruned to keep it much smaller with less foliage than yours, and at the moment it's having from 2 to 4 gallons of water from the watering can every day.

I'm sorry to say that I don't hold out a lot of hope for it ... it may recover and put on some new growth next year but every dry spell is likely to have the same result.

I'm afraid that I don't hold out much hope for the continued health of that wisteria either ... plants that size need gallons of water.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news  :'(
I’m afraid I don’t know anything about grape vines, but I thought Wisteria didn’t need or like a lot of water. I planted ours 6 years ago and apart from the first year I don’t think I’ve ever watered it. It must be getting its water from somewhere.

Wisteria don't need as much water as a grape vine, because they don't need the moisture to swell the grapes, and I believe their roots go deeper too,  but the bigger they are and the more flowers and leaves they grow the more moisture they lose in hot dry/windy weather so the more water they need.

    Hi all

Thought as I would revisit this thread to give an update and confirm my fears :(

The tree has a lot of white and dry white twigs:

And I fear that it is dead. This time April last year it was a lot greener (although we had a lot of sun last year):

Should there be at least some green leaves by now if the tree is still alive or is it too soon ?

Also I am wondering if the tree is diseased, this doesn't look healthy to me:

    Thanks

Mine has no sign of leaves yet ...  it's still dormant ... I only pruned it a few weeks ago ... I don't expect to see leaves until some time in May.

I'd cut out all the white/dead twigs and cut back side branches to 3 buds otherwise you'll just have a jungle and it'll get very heavy.

Hi Kay, only just joined the forum and seen the collossal grape vine you had last year. Fraid it does look dead now. Mine have all started opening their first buds this year.
Sorry yours dried up. I have a feeling this year will be hotter than last year.

Well david attenbenborough is apparently predicting every year from now on will be hotter.

Hi all me again - so it would seem that there is some signs of life still left beneath the leaves on the left there are the first sign of grapes growing

however above the white window there is nothing growing at all.. no canes..

Does this mean that there will never be any canes/shoots or grapes growing on this part of the tree or is this just an off season? :)

    Thanks
