Apparently he's been quoted as saying "...I don't write fiction for people to identify with and I don't write a picture of the world they can recognise. I write to astonish people. ....... What excites me is to disturb the reader's fundamental assumptions. I want to make them feel that certain categories within which they are used to perceiving the world are unstable."

Is that the finest example of "pretentiousness"?

Hmmm ... don't think so @Hostafan1 ........ I think it's just an explanation of his intentions when writing a novel .... a novel can take many forms just as painting or music can ... Will Self's are probably verging on the Abstract Expressionist with a touch of Surrealism from what I can make out  :D  .... as for a music simile .... perhaps a bit of Rigoletto with some Pearl Jam and a touch of Drum & Bass?

@Dovefromabove, love that music simile, that just might be, the music for me.

In my youth I was a "singer" in a punk band called Grope. Very pleased to say that there are no recordings available.
Our encore was always a very speeded up version of Leaving on a Jet Plane.

I married a bass guitarist! (He grew up and became an actuary but I never forgot who I first loved!)
Punk I have been a bit slow on the uptake but glad you got your degree😄

I am sorry if I misled you LP. It was just that at the time of my posting, the site was full of SPAM, advertising degrees for sale [ I think ]
Lets hear it for bass guitarists, the rock and rollers.

What a great name. I wish modern rock bands had better names.

My OH is a bassist too.  I can spot one a mile off. He was in several bands when we were first together (incl one with that wildlife bloke off the telly, and another with Kate Fleetwood who seems to be popping up everywhere). I can't remember any of the names except one: The Chops That Stanley Had.
