Lyn, Thank you for the vote of confidence although it was a long learning period. We had computers in the army when they were massive things that did less than my pay and go phone. ICI was into computers they dumped one in my office and said that will do away with all your paper work? I had a PA and an office full of girls, they did all the work the difference being every Monday morning a mountain of print out landed on my desk which would have taken a week to read had I bothered, my PA kept me up to speed. Computers were no mystery and in 2000 I took and passed the European standard test paper for the fun of it. We all have choices, you reach a certain age and either give up or move with the times, I am the latter until the day I go to the big Parade ground in the sky.
We won and then Croatia beat Russia and I saw it all with the sound off as I cannot stand those so called pundits pontificating.
I am with you Hogweed, you are trying to get into the story and on come a list of names, my TV screen is full of holes in the shape of the hard things I throw at it. Frank.
Frank, I remember when I wanted to get in touch with my sister in America on this new fangled thing in the late 1980's. She was living on the American Airforce Base. Somehow I sent an email to the Commander, and he printed it out and delivered my email to her door 😀.
She then got online, and as the internet progressed, that was when we made a promise about never being on facebook 😄
Frank, the first computer I worked on was in 1978, a huge thing about 3’ wide and 6’ tall. Haven’t they come on over the years 😀 I have now cleaned my laptop and only use the iPad, laptop seems old fashioned, slow, clunky and complicated compared to the instant iPad.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
The first computer I worked with was analog (1968) with valves, used to go and get a morning cup of coffee while they warmed up. Moved to digital in 1972, punched tape and those massive stacks of cards which you knew you would drop one day!
Weird experience in Mountain View, California - they have a 'Computer Museum' and (aside from the replica Babbage engine) I found I was familiar with most of the exhibits.
Trouble is the programming and management skills have become sloppy IMHO, when capacity is not a problem why worry about performance? Why create a simple, elegant solution for 64k when you can go wild with 1Gb?
"The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it." Sir Terry Pratchett
@herbaceous what was the watering can for in that picture of my mum's friend Betty? I love it when you watch old Bond films and everything is futuristic, hi tec analogue. Rubes my SIL started her own little cleaning company after she was begged by folk when she worked for someone else. The problem was that the bigger company didn't always send the same person to the client but when J came they knew she'd do a good job. She's lovely and gentle and easy going and cleans like a demon!!! I've seriously considered employing her myself but it would have to be a full Spring clean as the distance is a bit much for a weekly clean.
Lyn, I bought the Apple iPad first, Mail Order J. Lewis with all the Guarantees which proved to work as the iPad packed up the first year and J.L. sent another by Courier, perfect service. That as against a clunky Laptop set me off and an Apple laptop arrived for my own Christmas present again Mail order from J.L. with five years guarantee what more could you ask? My Letters and posts tend to be long and the pokey finger method on the iPad was slowing me down, I do not like it so the Qwerty Keyboard is ideal after all I did learn to type on the old style upright manual progressing to an electric with a little window where you could read half a sentence, now passed on to my daughter who still uses it. The laptop talks to the iPad my Music Hub all are Wi-Fi the printer next to my seat I find them all easy to use and often have music on the Hub typing and printing with no visible connections isn't progress wonderful. Frank.
Now for the moan, I am with you Shrinking Violet as I get at least two posts a day asking permission to contact me, it is a Government Regulation they all say. But surely Gas Electric and even this GW board must have enough security to keep us reasonably safe. Two local Furniture shops contacted me I have not bought anything from them in at least five years though they keep sending expensive brochures, the printing and sending of those must have killed any profit they made from me. I would get a big skip and put those fools, all football pundits, Queens and Wimbledon into it along with all the other unwanted items we are plagued with. Frank.
