Favourite drought tolerant plants

FlinsterFlinster Posts: 883
Its too hot! We’ve had no rain since 29th May. What are your favourite drought tolerant plants for a cottage style garden in full sun? I have some gaps to fill! (Soil is clay in one border and chalky cwith thin layer of clay in another)

  • Daylilies are extremely drought tolerant and grow well in any soil.

Id second day lilies. Hollyhocks are a good bet once established with their deep tap root too

Lavender and Lychnis coronaria are 2 that spring to mind.

Not usually keen on red but I love Achillea 'Pomegranite' which is noted for its colour not fading and it really is the colour of ripe pomegranate

Russian Sage grows in the unwatered areas of my Utah desert garden.. can't get tougher that that.  It's a beautiful (if slightly smelly when touched) plant with great form and purple flowers bees go crazy for.  My bees prefer it over my salvias or any other flower in my garden.

Achillea 'Perry's White', S. Royal Bumble, white valerian, sedum, lavenders and rosemary, erigeron (though far from drought tolerant in a pot. I'm still trying to figure that one out).

I have a favourite plant which came with the house and I'd never seen it before.  It's called Anthemis punctata, low-growing, evergreen ground cover, foliage is grey-green, faintly aromatic, and in May it has white daisies the size of a 2p coin.  It's very easy to propagate from cuttings, so if you have a sunny corner to fill, I'll send you some!

Wow!... think I might need a new border lol! Some great suggestions, thank you! Josusa47 that is so kind- I would love some it’s lovely, thanks so much! I have 2 rather neglected borders as I’ve been so busy sorting out other areas and I really need to sort them out! Nothing has been staked (too late now) flopping all over and it’s such a jumble! I need to plan it out and shuffle everything around in the autumn, but will fill gaps in the meantime!

I guess Beth Chatto's gravel garden (full sun, never watered) would give good options. Nepeta would be good with the Russian sage.
