The botanical gardens are lovely, Tin pot, I think I remember some unusual trees (bit tricky to smuggle back in your suitcase) but not much by way of underplanting, I recall, but it was a long time ago. I fear you might be disappointed on the plant front, far greater diversity in the UK, as a rule. Let us know if you discover some amazing GC though!

Not sure anything is too rare in the seed department here but I’ve bought things that look weird to me

Lovely pics.......are those trees covered in a netting? (pic 4)  Did you find out why?  I see you are having the obligatory glass of vino with your lunch  :D

Time for another wine stop.  It is *hot*.  32°C. Trust me to be in Madrid on the longest days.

Its the Evil Butterfly Plague apparently:

Another plea on GW last night to bring back plants as there are new pests and diseases spreading across the continent and without which the UK would prefer to stay.

The RHS has already placed quarantine times on material imported for the shows and has given notice that they will be expecting designers and show garden builders to source all their material form UK growers in the near future.

Ask yourselves how Dutch elm disease got in, or the beasties attacking horse chestnuts and now ash trees are in danger not to mention this new problem that's wiping out olive trees all over southern Europe.  Better to be safe and get your seeds and plants thru registered sources in the UK.

I found a couple of blotchy looking olive trees in a skip nearby, I’m sure I can nurse them back to health in Kent, so I’ve put them into suitcases!

Oh, and a couple of butterflies from the Botanical have nested in my baggage - would be a shame to disturb them, eh?
