Bramble?

  • Salt works fine but should not be applied in large quantity as it stay in the ground for years and will make the soil unsuitable for future growth. You can re plant relatively quickly after applying systemic weedkiller, you can't after applying salt. Salt is really strong, I actually have used it to kill large hawthorn tree stumps. Best way to apply it would be to drill few holes in the bramble stump, fill them with salt, water and cover the stump until it rots down. That said I don't encourage you to use salt all the time because you have to be careful about its effect on surrounding plants.

Yes, salt can do a lot of damage ... just talk to anyone who gardens alongside one of the roads that was heavily salted this winter during the big freeze ... plants aren't growing on those verges.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

And the first things to recolonise those areas are the tough plants such as brambles, nettles and similar.  Precisely what the OP is trying to get rid of.  Whilst I accept that some people don't like using weedkiller there are times when it's the only realistic choice and actually more environmentally friendly than some 'natural' treatments.
  • Small quantity is the key, a pinch (provided you drill a hole in the stump) will be enough to kill a bramble stump (yours does not look to big) and will not damage surrounding plants. Worked for me anyway.
