No magpies around here, the equally bullying, raucous Jays defend their territory fiercely, screeching and squabbling in my cherry plum trees. I do have a family of pied wagtails that have set up a flying school on my house roof, they are practicing flying back and forth to the garage roof - sooo sweet!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

I always end up doing a double take when I see that plant mentioned. I either have poor eyesight or a dirty mind. :o

    :D

My noisiest birds at the moment are the baby black redstarts in the nest in the veranda just outside the kitchen, the parents are being kept so busy. So cute.

I hope the magpies leave you in peace soon, Fire, or maybe you will get used to it and go back to sleep.

I am using earplugs. It's the answer to a peaceful life, I find.

When we moved here from london my wife couldnt sleep because of the rooks, now she cant sleep if she cant hear them! Im guessing the magpies are fledglings letting their parents know where to deliver the latest meal?

No, it does seem more louche than that. They look pretty full sized to me - not that I know about magpies. They seem to be chatty. I haven't seen any parents coming in to commune with them.

Or one of those high frequency emitters that are supposed to deter teenagers from loitering.

You might want to avoid the bird song though :#
