It grows as a weed by the pavements where I live. Lovely plant though, and I have a red one in a pot on my patio. Kept meaning to collect seeds from the wild ones, but kept forgetting so ended up buying one.
Ha! Some smell it and some don't! I'd fancied some for a couple of years and kept forgetting to buy any, then (imagine my joy!) a load self-seeded at the bottom of a wall. I was about to transplant when I noticed this - see below - smell and then decided against it!

I holiday in the St Ives area every year ... the place is full of Centranthus ruber (red valerian) and I grow it in my garden here in Norfolk. I have never ever noticed any sort of smell
