It grows as a weed by the pavements where I live. Lovely plant though, and I have a red one in a pot on my patio. Kept meaning to collect seeds from the wild ones, but kept forgetting so ended up buying one.

Love the white ones!! Shame about the smell though. You’d expect something as lovely as this to smell like mock orange

I have never noticed a smell either. Is it both red and white? What does it smell of?

I’ve got the pink one. No smell.
But if anyone wants some seedlings I can post them.

Ha!  Some smell it and some don't!  I'd fancied some for a couple of years and kept forgetting to buy any, then (imagine my joy!) a load self-seeded at the bottom of a wall.  I was about to transplant when I noticed this - see below - smell and then decided against it!

Wikipedia (Centranthus Ruber): "The blooms have a strong and somewhat rank scent."

I holiday in the St Ives area every year ... the place is full of Centranthus ruber (red valerian) and I grow it in my garden here in Norfolk.  I have never ever noticed any sort of smell
