I found that remarkably interesting, thanks Dove!
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • That's the kind of banana plant I was thinking of.
I once drove through Dole's pineapple plantation in Hawaii. It was all along public roads but they had cctv all over the place and if they saw you getting out of your car they sent out security in 4x4's to warn you off. It was like being in a South African diamond field.

@Dovefromabove, you can pick one up for about £10 and enjoy it for the rest of summer, 4 months worth of enjoyment.
Compare that with £10 spent on a bottle of wine? a couple (?? ) of tickets to the cinema, a couple of steaks. How long do they last? a couple of hours each? . It's well worth it even if it doesn't last the winter. IMHO

I know what you're saying @Hostafan1 ... but we'd probably give it a name and grow fond of it ...

you should see some of the photos on the "hardy tropicals" group on FB. Folk keep all sorts in their bathrooms, bedrooms etc.

I was about to say how daft it seems to me to try and grow things that so obviously don't belong here.  Then I remembered that I've planted two azaleas and a blueberry, and I'm on limestone.

Don't ... OH is already talking about a little trolley on castors so he can wheel it in and out of the studio and move it into the kitchen when we're painting ...

Dove, thanks for sharing the video.. I never imagined the effort that went into harvesting the bananas I eat.  I remember watching a BBC clip once of celery being harvested, by a combine filled with suspended immigrants harvesting nonstop while it slowly moved across the field.  The entire cutting, washing, and packing process was completed within the monstrous vehicle.  It was a moving factory.

Couldn't be doing with a banana plant.  I move cannas in and out but you get gorgeous flowers with those.  The dahlias stay in the garden and take their chance.
