I don't think it's unkind, it restricts itself, as it's closely planted with other roses. I've never pruned it, so it's very manageable.. and of course it's twined around the obelisk, rather than outstretched on a wall or trellis... but it can grow larger if it wants as there is a rope extension... these roses are very flexible in the way they can be grown, which is why I think they're worth the extra cost..
I hope you enjoy your 'Lark Ascending' it's rather thorny but the blooms make it worth it..
Definitely worth it. I have 28 roses waiting to be planted of which all but 3 are DA's and one of the those is a DA offspring - Breathless Charm from Daniel Schmidt, a Belgian rose grower in Malmédy.

That's nice, it will keep you busy...I expect you have a large garden... I hope you'll share photos with us of these lovely roses when they bloom... one can never see enough of roses for those who appreciate them...
Ive been to david austin today and bought a st swithun rose. Does anyone have any experience with this particular climber as it was not one familiar with it until I saw it growing on a few of DA walls. Just wondering how vigorous it is , ease of training and if it has any scent. Sorry if slightly off topic
Jason.. I did have St Swithun once, but I didn't like the bloom form too much, and at that time it was just one rose too many... probably not the rose's fault, but I hope it does well for you... I'm sorry I cannot be of more help there, I know it can grow quite large in time, if that's what you want..
Chris... a nice looking bloom, lovely rose, I hope it does well for you.. I think it's supposed to be a low thorn variety too..
Obelisk, I meant to say, I hope your Daniel Schmitz rose does well for you, it's not one I know of, but he has a very large inventory of roses, one of the largest in Europe I imagine... it's a pity that some continental nurseries don't always make it so easy to order from them, even within the E.U...
Marlorena - I used to go to the Aywiers spring plant fair every year and discovered Daniel selling a limited range of DA roses, in pots and with established root systems, for the same price as bare root ordered from DA and no P&P. I figured any he offered would be hardy in the Ardennes and should then cope in my garden. He was kind enough to let me order in advance and pay at the fair.
The ones I have in pots are from him or else cuttings of ones bought through him plus a few I've ordered since from a French online supplier. Once they're all safely planted I shall be delighted to post pics of them.

oh we look forward to seeing those I'm sure... thank you.. I've got roses from Fabien-Ducher in France, they are easy to order from and to anyone reading, I totally recommend them, great roses, quick delivery, and no more expensive then buying over here... the way all web sites should operate in my opinion.. no language problems either..
Marlorena I wonder if you could give me your opinion and what to do about my climbers
They were all given a horse manure feed ( bagged and commercially sold) then we had a very cold spell of night time weather. Gradually they all turned yellow, brown burnt looking new growth that crumples like paper when rubbed, basically I think they are all dying. 3 were established, and 4 planted last year. The ones in the ground aren’t too good either but my ramblers are all fine! Interestingly the diorama at the base isn’t looking too great either! I have cut out more dead and brown stems today, last week they got a handful of growmore to try and give them a boost. if I leave them might they come back next year? very very sad, they are all David Austin some older than others
