Yes - they might do the job for you Claire. They're are only a few varieties and colours - mainly purply'lilac, but Fire's right - there's a white I don't grow roses - but I'd think there would be a good few of those that would be fine. Do molluscs like Solanums? Not something I grow, but perhaps they would be ok
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thanks guys, some good ideas to consider. I have thought of climbing roses but they do get problems with black spot and greenfly. I wonder if my trellis is strong enough for such a rampant climber such as a rose? But lots to consider in my battle against the slugs! 👍
I have a trellis against a fence and grow two climbers on it. They are both perennial ie grow year after year but are herbaceous ie die down in winter so you can stain the trellis fence if you want too. One plant is the golden hop, limy green leaves and hops some years, the other is the perennial sweet pea, a white one. The hop is apparently a food source for tortoiseshell? butterflies I don't see the caterpillars but get lots of butterflies. The sweetpea is easy to grow from seed ..I also have the pink and the reddish purple one. Both do well here in the NE.
