Thanks, widening the border is definitely on my to do list. I think its only 50 cm wide so will take another foot or so from the grass at some point. Most the canes I cut out were only a 1-2mm thick and struggled to support itself before the blooms came.
Hopefully it will recover because I hate roses that only have a cane or 2.
Be generous when widening it ... it'll make you much happier
Rather a shame you cut those off, it's part of their charm and grace and it's something one has to adapt to with shrub roses... what you are left with now is a kind of stick insect with lollipop heads like a hybrid tea. Those of us who grow shrub roses like to try and get away from that look, so we grow these...
Widening the border is a good idea, and you wouldn't have perhaps been so bothered by the growth habit then, I did notice it was hanging over your lawn, but take heart, it will grow back and you'll figure out how to deal with it.. it's your garden after all, and you can do whatever you will in your own way.. so that's no problem..
Also, try to grow roses with perennials, that way any weird growth can be camouflaged more easily... Here is my rose today, it's very dark, [you don't have to like the way I grow it]... with Verbascum 'Flush of White' and white Linum.. I think you don't notice its habit quite so much like this..
All my David Austin climbers have suffered badly from a cold blast we had in May. They actually look as if they are dying. This would have been 3rd season. I am so sad

Very beautiful. I prefer that the the pink they sometimes show. It's amazing to me, the variety of colours that one flower can go through, during the season and over the years. One of my current fascinations, along with ticks, soil chemistry and slug identification. What a rock and roll lifestyle!
Your border looks great and certainly hides its habit. I did orginally want a simply rose border next to the patio. A contrast to the wild borders. Buts its definitely something I will do in the future.
Hopefully mine will bounce back in no time and I think I may order those hoops someone put further up the thread. At least they will look tidy whilst they are bulking up.
When I pruned the stems this morning the branches must of had 50+ blooms and buds. Not bad for a 1 year old rose.
I'm not really happy with the out come of my pruning. Its something I personally hate about the lollipop look a lot of roses end up like. Mine does have buds at the bottom so fingers crossed.
It'll soon recover gavpre and you'll find a way to deal with it, your way... if it's any reassurance, lots of people all over the world bemoan its growth habit, but the colour and scent of its blooms make up for it, and that's why so many of us grow it..
Fire... The flowers will get much lighter in warm weather, when temps hit the 80's, a lighter crimson with some pink, and also some hot shades mixed in.. I like it then too.. like this one..

In the meantime, some half-hoop plant supports https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Gard-N-Hoop-Plant-Support-System-52cm-X-90cm-pack-of-10-by-Selections/2153102561?iid=292513516263 will stop any new canes flopping too low .... they'll be almost invisible if you push their legs right down into the ground.
