ok... basal breaks more usually occur towards the autumn, or after the first flush of bloom, so you should get something develop from the cane you have later on I would think. This isn't a rose I've ever grown. I have a couple of one cane wonder roses too, so you're not alone there... sometimes it seems you can be waiting for ever to get another cane come up...and then they surprise you, in September...
Incidentally, although you bought it off Austin, it's not one of their own breeding, it dates from the 1950's. The blooms are supposed to be quite fragrant.. the original rose was named for the wife of Bill Harkness, the breeder. I have several Harkness roses in my garden, they're good breeders of so many fine roses..
There you go, it's on its way, and will develop deeper colours as time goes on. They do get lighter in hot weather by the way, so when we hit the 80's in temps, you might see more pink or yellow in them..
I hope it's ok for me to re-open my old thread? I have a new rose related query and everyone was so helpful last time I figured it would be best to comment on this thread.
I recently bought a rose from Gardeners World Live - a Chevy Chase to climb up my fence. It was doing well and then all of a sudden had 2 shoots grow much more rapidly than any of the others, with no blooms. I was told these are likely suckers and read up on how to sort this. So I started to cut these down and work out which stems are which based on how many leaves are on the stems...turns out as I got closer to the ground it wasn't that simple. It seemed that the 7 leave stems also had other stems with 5 leaves which made me not know where I was supposed to be pruning to...so I've stopped and I don't know what to do next! There also seems to be a not so long stem with nice blooms on which has 7 leaves which confused me even more.
I'll attach some photos although not sure how helpful they'll be.
I see nothing wrong with your rose there... the 5 and 7 leaves business is nonsense and you shouldn't go by that.. I would like to have seen photos of the canes you think are suckers as I suspect you may have been pruning out new growth.... this is a rambler type red rose, that blooms usually only once in late Spring/early Summer.. quite a spectacular variety in that colour.. although you may get some later repeat blooms, which are always welcome.. What is the provenance of your rose please.. where did you get it from?...
The top photo I might question... can I see another photo sometime of that cane? is it thornless?
That's interesting to know the 7/5 leaf thing isn't accurate. I hope I haven't pruned out lots of new growth and ruined it! It did seem odd that it was just the 2 stems that shot up (like an extra 4 feet). I will have a look if the one you mention is thornless.
I got it from Gardeners World live in June - I can't remember much more about it but I'll check the label.
Is there a way of telling whether any stems are suckers in the future? It did seem odd to me that it didn't go all the way to the ground. If I have pruned something I shouldn't I hope it comes back next year!
If you get a sucker, the foliage will look like this below, this is a sucker I had and grew on a bit... your rootstock should be the same.. The canes are almost thornless on this... as you can see the foliage is quite different to your rose...
@Marlorena..........I have begun pruning my shrubs and roses after joining this forum. How do I get my roses to be many stemmed? My roses don't seem to be increasing in size.
