Plastic Fencing, good or bad ?

  • Just to say @Atacama we did install a colourfence about 18 months ago and we are very pleased. No, you can't reuse existing concrete posts as the whole thing matches in colour. The only negative I could think is the rather narrow choice of colours and that it's pricey, but would absolutely hate having to paint such a long fence every five years.

If you have a franchisee locally to you, they can come over and show you samples of the material and make your own mind up.

I'd agree your approach. If I was looking for an entire system I would go that route. A little bit regardless of cost.

But we do have all the primary posts, base boards and indeed specially fabricated rust proof brown post covers fitted. Sort of wish I hadn't in a way then I'd have a mental green light to napalm the lot. But given these are fresh and perfect then I'm stuck down the 'board replacement route'.

Not sure if I mentioned earlier but the PVC samples are surprisingly robust. There is a hell of a price curve mind for the finishes. They are all the same physical build quality but the finish between plain green/white/brown to a textured/grain effect in a wider range of colours. But the price between the solid colours and the more highly finished product is pretty much 100% ....  from memory maybe £23 per board through £46 per board. That's quite a delta.

The build appears the same as a upvc window and I guess that might make sense. As such with the right installation and ongoing treatment, they should easily break the 25 year life projection.

With a clean sheet I'd still take the metal system but our scenario lends itself more to the pvc one.

I'm not sure I'd have the confidence to pick a fence colour I'd be stuck with for 25 years any more than I'd want the same bedlinen, carpet or wallpaper for 25 years.

Precisely why you have to be careful @Hostafan1.   Bit like choosing a shed or greenhouse or brick or stone for a new house/shed/retaining wall.  Kinda permanent.

    Maybe there is no point?

As an absolute I'd agree but in reality how often are folks changing the colour of their fencing system? By shades maybe but radically? Would think not so common.

In fairness the wood system that I'm talking about replacing (not longer talking, order placed a few hours back) has been in play 23-25 years ish. And it may have changed between Ronseal's new tone and product name but essentially has been pretty much the same base colour all that time.

  • I've just had Colorfence installed along one side of my garden. We get howling SW winds but its got a 25yrs guarantee and up to 140mph wind resistance. Expensive but should outlast me!!!

We like our wooden fencing ... we love the way it mellows with age ❤
