This is near where I live. I've seen it grow over the years. Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but I think it's completely fabulous!

I love that too. Stops you seeing a rather ugly, dull wall  :)
I've seen pyracantha done in a similar way and it also looked fabulous.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Wow, pyracantha. Mine was an explosion of growth every spring/summer. I've decided it's either a hedge or a tree best left unpruned. I guess if you can reach it easily it is indeed suitable and looks fabulous, perhaps more work.

Pity about the blue plastic though!

    Does it ever have berries?
Can't see me doing that to mine. It looks a bit 'tortured

Ditto. I'd prefer to see the torture stop , let it flower to help the bees and let it berry to feed birds and let the foliage grow back to allow shelter and nest sites too.

I don’t like it either, it goes with those silly little round balls on sticks, sometimes known as bay trees.

Good points about flowers and shelter, but I really don't get the emotive point about torture, unless you feel the same about hedges, lawns, pollarding, coppicing, pinching et cetera. Heck, dead-heading to prolong flowering is pretty cruel when you think about it.

Methinks this is what happens when you ask for the opinions of others. With some you'll agree , with others , you won't.

@Hostafan1 I'm pointing out some of the things that gardeners do. That can happen when you bring up torture. You might agree, you might disagree .. kind of goes without saying. I really dont mind if this is not to your taste (the world would be a dreary place if everyone had the same preferences). The torture remark is ironic given that so many other gardening activities can be described as such.

I quite like it but... Not if doing this means you get no flowers or berries.

I find the flowers really pretty up close, small but lovely.
