Due to the amount of rose related question ( I for one have posed a few as a newbie) would it be an idea to have one continously running rose thread. A "catch all" thread that just discusses rose issues, best varities etc etc. What are people' thourghts?
Help with roses .I am worried about one of two roses on a trellis. They are both "Super Dorothy" and are growing up different sides of a trellis. They are now well into their second year. The one on the north facing trellis is doing very well but The west facing one looks as if it has some virus or something I have been spraying it for Aphids etc with little effect. I am worried about leaving it in the ground. You can see the big difference.
I seem to keep loosing this post. I am not sure what I did wrong so I tried again trying again No one seemed to see it.
This rose is on a north facing trellis and is growing well. The rose on the West facing trellis looks very poorly. The leaves and buds seem to be deformed by what looks a virus or such. The top picture shows the healthy Rose. Both planted in the same soil planted at the same time. No previous roses planted there.
The leaves also look very pale and weak, like it's lacking nitrogen. Is there any chance weedkiller may have drifted onto the rose at some point? I would advice you prune the rose down very low and feed it, then see how it responds.
What are those grey barriers for? Is it part container grown? Do you have a tree partially over hanging it? Just trying to look at the environment it is growing in to get a better idea.
Borderline Do you mean the edging metal? that is to hold the slate chips in place. They were very well fed and planted. The tree hanging over does not give much shadow. The trellis is hiding the four large dustbins of our compost. The rose is in the soil and to my knowledge there have not been any roses there in the 31 yrs we have been there. The plot our houses are now on was the site of an old house. Borderline you might be right but I can't remember spraying much around there. I will try cutting it hard back. I don't have much to loose there.
I am a relative new rose grower. My Rambling Rector is doing well. If you have any more ideas I would be grateful. I will prune them back and give them a good feed.
I'm sure they are well fed and planted. Since you are not entirely sure, it is best to prune them down and give them a good watering. At this time of year, they may throw up a lot of new growth if all fine.
I think something like The Fairy or Super Fairy would be a good replacement should this one not thrive. They are tough roses, and your wall doesn't look that high. It can be trained up as they grow. I bought my mum two of those fifteen years ago and they have been treated badly over the years, one on a north west wall and another on a south east wall, and without fail, every year, masses of 4cm wide flowers fill the shrub. The leaves are a lovely deep glossy green. Always the last to finish flowering in December.
Thanks Borderline. I have cut it back and fed and watered it. I have just looked up The Fairy. it looks as if it would work as instead. When I first went to David Austins nursery, that was an extremely hot day the like of which we have had lately.
