What would grow well with a holly hedge

BurmbakBurmbak Posts: 3
i am looking for ideas to buy a fast growing plant to thicken and add some interest to my rather thin but tall and established holly hedge. It extends around a sunny south facing to a shaded side return so the complementing plant would need to be able to cope with these different conditions. It has gOod drainage and quite sandy river basin soil. I've thought of a honeysuckle but not sure if that would work and if it does the. what type is recommended? Any ideas welcome please?

I am hoping the additional plant would grow into the holly to create a more complete screen without too much extra depth.  There is also an outside metal railing that it can grow through and possibly get some support from?

I think the best thing you can do is to keep the hedge clipped at the top and sides and then, after some decent, penetrating rain this autumn, give the base of the hedge a good weed and then a thick mulch of well-rotted garden compost and manure which the worms will work into the soil over winter.

Next spring, give it a generous handful of slow release fertiliser per metre and then watch it grow.   Given such encouragement, it will thicken by itself and fill those gaps in no time.

  • I would keep it as 100% pure holly.
It will soon fatten up and fill all the gaps.

I'd agree. If it gets a good prune etc, as @Obelixx describes, it'll thicken up nicely.  :)
I doubt a honeysuckle would thrive in the conditions you have anyway.
