Do you prepp?

Prepping is not just about prepearing for war, it's also about things like power shortages, unemployment etc. It can be simple questions as "Can I give my kids a hot meal if there is a power shortage or a gas leak?"
We are gardeners and many of us grow veggies. Not all unfortunatly. We that do, know it's not as simple as turning the soil and adding some potatoes. It takes time before a soil is suitable, and soil also need fertilizers, if you only fertilize with things out of mines in other countries, how would you know what your soil needs if you need to produce it yourself? And do you rotate seeds so the won't get to old?

I'm more of a survivor than a prepper, of course I prepp things I can't produce myself,  but mainly, I want to be able to eat no matter what. So I don't just grow veggies, they can get stolen, I grow edible plants that few know are edible.

Whats your take on this? Or haven't you given it any thought?

We could probably survive for years on ground elder... :)

Seriously though, I have to prep. every winter, as we live half a mile from a road and can get heavy drifting snow. I lay in stocks of all basic dry goods, so I can make bread etc, cans and jars and longlife milk and juices. Plus food for the cats, dogs, sheep and hens, and make sure there is firewood for the logburners and candles in case of power cuts.
We were cut off for several days a few times this last winter, and once we cooked Christmas dinner on the barbecue and log burners.
Our water comes from our own spring, my plants are fertilised with the contents of the sheep shed and seem to do well on it, and although I don't forage much I do know which plants could be eaten. I do pick the wild bilberries and blackberries though.

I always have a chest freezer full of food(mainly home grown) and a cupboard full of cans.  I have enough so that if bad weather hits, I can stay in for a week if necessary. We have candles for power cuts, and there is always the barbeque.
As for the sort of anarchy that would hit after a nuclear war, I'm not sure I want to survive for long.

The Mormons that surround me in Utah are massively into prepping.  Church rules say that you need a years supply of food and 72hrs of water for every individual in your family.  It was very interesting house hunting several years ago, getting peaks at their supplies stashed away in basements or other spaces.  Especially when some of them have ten kids.. so it looks like limited-variety grocery store in there.

I expect that any post apocalyptic situation will result in the death of social niceties.. and my unfortified suburban home will be easy pickings for my gunned-up neighbors and the gangs that eventually make it out of the larger cities near by.  My plan is to head for the mountains with my family, and do the best we can off the land.  To that end, I have a few books of wild edibles for our region.   :)  I'm sure we'll be fine, as long as the apocalypse comes mid-summer.

What good's a year's worth of food if you run out of water in 3days?

Blue, what are all the armed Mormons and their church preparing for, exactly? Isn't there some kind of contradiction, these days, in Christians being armed to the teeth?

    No prepp for me.
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdomand his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
