They may be 'spectacularly elderly' but when people with a sense of adventure become less able to travel without a bit of comfort and support, river cruises and coach trips can be just the thing ... 'old codgers' can be fascinating, interesting people with an amazing view of the world born of a long lifetime of meeting up with all sorts of people ... on the other hand I sometimes find that some younger people can have a very narrow 'black and white' view of the world ...
Just a thought
Lol... Touche Dove .. I'm with you all the way spot on. It takes all sorts to make the world go round young and old. We all get old sooner or later. Something for the young to think on when deriding the 'spectacularly elderly'

I took my father on an art tour of Italy for his 80th birthday. I hadn't clocked that I would be the youngest there by about 40 years. Everyone looked the same, read the same newspaper, nobody was a from a city, no diversity at all, everyone had the same nose. It was a bit of a shock. They complained bitterly about everything. I wasn't exactly expecting a punk element, but it was weirdly homogeneous and sour and not much fun to spend 10 days with. I won't be doing it again.
Ha ha - I shouldnt laugh, but I’ve always suspected it would be like that. Shame, because rocking up to Portsmouth harbour and throwing the family on is actually quite appealing.

For some reason, this sent me into mild hysterics. But l know what you mean !
Identical noses to the same detachable one that they shared?

I didn’t intend to offend any of the more mature patrons of this esteemed forum. I merely meant that as I’m not past my half century and Himself is a bit more youthful, that we were debating as to the general litheness of the clientele of these cruises.
Many, many years ago I took my mum on a 'Back to the Forties ' weekend coach trip. She was about 70, all the others ( including the coach driver ) were around the same age. I wasn't even 40. It was one of the best weekends away I have ever had.
@Steve the gardening vet, my daughter (51) was recently on a small group tour to Petra and other places in Jordan. She said there were a few very sprightly over 80s coping well with the steep climbs and that they were all very interesting to converse with.
my fear of cruises , and other "organised trips"is having some weirdo "latch on" and never being able to shake them off. We did a fabulous tour around Sri Lanka and some of them on the trip ( 16 in total ) I'd have thrown off the bus in the middle of nowhere and not blinked an eye as we drove off and left them there.
Variation on a theme but there are TV adverts for a company specialising in holidays for the 'more mature' audience in the UK. My immediate thought when I saw the first one was "Oh my god. Imagine spending time with them!" That opinion hasn't been changed by any of the subsequent ads either.
I used to live in Norfolk as a youngling, where a lot of people had the same nose. It's a phrase that stuck. Except there it was literally true. I would get on a local bus and everyone could have been cousins. It was very eerie. Kind of Stepford with mustard.

Thank god I didn’t say ‘coffin dodgers...’
this "more mature patron" I can assure you
Don't judge a book by it's cover
