Really it is not what this forum is all about, this forum is about gardening! By the way all cats are welcome in my garden
you've missed the forum title - it is "Problem Solving" and to many people, finding cat **** in the lawn, in kids sand boxes, in borders is a problem which needs solving. In what way is that not what the forum is about?
KT53, thank you for your response. Maybe you have missed my point too. As I said in my previous comment, everyone has their own opinion. I personally do not have any problem reading a thread where people give good practical advices to other people so they can keep cats away from your their garden. Cats are welcome in mine but I understand why it may bother other people. However when you use a public forum it is my opinion that people should be very careful about the wording they choose when formulating their answer. This forum is not about who can write the most inflammatory answer. When Hostafan describe cats as foul, stinking, killer creatures, it is what I call a highly pointless and inflammatory comment. If it is his opinion so be it, but he is not giving us any solution to the cat problem here. Reading that cats are foul, stinking and killer creature will not help me to keep them away from my garden. His comment is not constructive and has been posted to infuriate other readers who in return will want to reply back to him escalating the conversation. You are using a public forum, be mindful about what you write!

But that is precisely what they are. If you'd put you hand , as I did , in cat sh*t in a bed in my polytunnel where I grow food, you'd agree on the " foul, stinking" aspect too. Maybe you don't mind your food growing in cat sh*t, I know I do. And I've seen nobody deny that cats kill wildlife. QED. If you don't like what folk say, click on their names, and hit the " ignore" button. You'll see no more of them. Seemples
It may be what they precisely are to you and that's fine by me but I repeat do not share your highly controversial comment online. And maybe I don't mind my food growing in cat shit, I mean what sort of aggressive response is that!

I worked with the most severely disabled and life-limited children ... one of the most severely disabled children I ever met was a child whose mother had eaten salad grown in her garden where her pet cat had fouled. She had caught toxoplasmosis when pregnant with her youngest child https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/toxoplasmosis/gen_info/pregnant.html
The child's degree of learning and physical disabilities were some of the most severe I ever came across ... she was unable to speak, eat or do anything for herself and had no control over any part of her body ... her only vocalisation was to scream at high pitch for hours on end ... the marriage fell apart, the siblings' lives were unimaginable and the mother was consumed by guilt.
You eat food grown in cat shit if you want to ... but don't feed it to anyone else.

Dovefromabove no thank you I will pass on that one. I have never ever ever ever said that is is OK to eat food grown in cat poop. I mean hello where does this one come from? Come on let's stop this nonsense! And I have mentioned in my previous posts that I respect other people's opinions. Cats do not bother me in my garden but I understand why other people would want to keep them away. I do not have any problem at all with that. I only have said that whatever your opinion is you should moderate your comments when it comes to public forum. If your comments have the power to upset other readers then it is probably not worth it.
You are wasting your time @aureliecelerier. Discussions about cats always end up this way on this forum with extreme viewpoints and extreme examples.
Many people have suggested using a skoosher including myself and that works.
It is terrifying that some people do not understand that anything cannot be shared anywhere. This really takes the fun out of such a great forum. I am fairly new to it but thoroughly enjoy learning about new things.
I personally think that the raging arguments on this thread are quite useful. If they make one cat owner (or potential cat owner) think a bit more about the impact their pet can have on other people, other peoples gardens and our native wildlife.
I dont really blame the individual owners, there is a cultural acceptance that dogs should be controlled but cats can and should be left to roam free.
It's a debate that ought to be had regularly though, and maybe there will be a shift, as there has been with dogs over the last few decades, to the realisation that cats are pets. They can, and should, be controlled, and are the responsibility of the owners.
I think a lot of people get cats as pets as they are perceived as the easier option to a dog. As dog owner I have had to fence in my property, I have to walk her every day, and I have to clean up her mess. Thats what you sign up to when you get one. There is no reason why a cat owner shouldnt have to take the same responsibility for their pet, which they have through choice. The attitude needs to be that If you can't be responsible for caring for them, and controlling their movements outside your property, then don't get one.
I don't have cats because they are an 'easier option' I prefer them to dogs for many reasons. An "easy option" is no pets I think if people just confined themselves to giving advice as to how to deal with cats in the garden that would be more appropriate for a gardening forum. If you don't like cats you are perfectly within your rights to dislike them but it's not helpful just ranting about how horrible they are is it?
