Gardening Myth Busting

Inspired by @Fairygirl (and snail eggs), I'd like to hear about common gardening myths you bump into all the time. It might be fun to give them a good airing, put them on the line, as spring is here....

    Lots of hedgerow fruits means a harsh winter is coming.
    Encourage birds, frogs, etc  into your garden and they will eat the pests.

    Clematis like their heads in the sun and feet in the shade.   With a mere 3,700 clems registered on this site - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-about.cfm - that may true of some but not the majority.
