Is it possible to grow a free standing apricot tree in the West Mids

Hi everyone

I would like to grow a free standing apricot tree, I am situated in the Birmingham area, if so does anyone recommend a variety with which i will get the best chance of success or am I wasting my time.

If you have squirrels nearby, I wouldn't bother. I am in the East Midlands, the years we didn't get a frost and the fruit set, the squirrels ate them while they were still green.

People do, but they are tricky as frost tender. You need to be in a sheltered, mild enough spot, near a warm, sheltered, south-facing wall. If you have a corner in full sun, it might work with new dwarf varieties.
