Asbestos was used for it's fire resistance. Is there charcoal inside?

I’ll have a fiddle with it tomorrow and try and get the videos posted. That white block could be asbestos from a quick google but hard to tell.

If it could be asbestos for goodness sake take some proper precautions ... you may need to call in the professionals to deal with it .. it can be nasty stuff  ...

My OH thinks it's the air vent for a nuclear bunker. Does James live near Greenham Common by any chance?

Why is there an insole in the hatch?
A pre-febreeze plimsoll as in pre-trainers deodoriser prototype. It could be put in hotel rooms next to the trouser press and fold up thing you never put your suitcase on.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Have you had a firtle around where it's concreted into the ground? Do you know the extent of the concrete at its base? I can't imagine it was intended to put anything inside as there's no access apart from that grid, so I think the possibility of a vent to provide air to a structure underground seems the most plausible. I don't really buy it being over 45 years old and if it was for a WWII air raid shelter it would have to be 70 years old, which it clearly isn't. Hence hubby's idea that there might be a fall-out shelter under your garden :)

I'm going to get an asbestos test on the items in the container before I crack it open.
    Stay tuned.

Good ... sensible decision.  OH's lovely dad died of mesothelioma before he'd even reached retirement age  :'(
