    It's cemented to the ground. Does the house have a basement/cellar? If it was used a smoker, maybe the grill at the front was originally detachable or open and they blocked it up with black stuff later to stop ... cats or rats getting in.

    That was my thinking too ...

    I think Thankthecat is right and you should get your solicitors to ask the previous owners what it is - did you not ask the estate agent when you originally viewed the house or wasn't it there then?
