Very sensible - my OH was saying you must be careful - even if no asbestos then a filter mask wouldn't be a bad idea. We're both so curious to know what this is!
It may be that the suspicion of knowledge that it contains asbestos is the reason it's still where it is ... the previous owner may have not wanted to pay to have it disposed of safely. However, it's remiss of your surveyor not to have spotted a potential hazard.
