Rhododendrum

Can anyone help?
My rhododendrum got eaten last autumn, not sure if wine weevil got it so I treated it, or if it was a leaf cutter bee? Anyhows, I’m just tidying the garden & im sure there are more parts eaten, also the leaves have gone purple/brown? We have had some snow here in the UK a month ago now, not sure if that’s damaged the leaves or if I have something else happening? Really appreciate any advice 😊

Those bites out the edges of the leaves look like a leaf cutter bee has been at it.

I don't think it's leaf cutter bees.. they are neater and more circular in their cuts.  Adult vine weevil?
    Utah, USA.
  • This little critter looks to be doing the same to our Rhododendrons 😠
  • I thought vine weevil, we’ve had them before as mine are all potted but weve kept on top of them & not lost anymore plants, I treated it with a vine weevil treatment & it’s due another now. Can I save the plant or is it too infested or worse will I have to inspect - I hate vine weevil 😐
    Thanks both
any idea why the leaf discolouration?
  • The Rickster -?That’s an adult vine weevil - I hate them cos they are so destructive if you don’t catch them. I’ve lost lots of well established plants to them 😡👊

The colouring on the leaves are probably some type of scorch or frost damage. I don't think it is linked to the cuts on the leaves. That can be Vine Weevil or Caterpiller damage. If you are growing it under any type of tree/shrub canopy, try to bring it away from that situation. I think you will also need to re-pot as it's sitting in a slightly bigger pot which is already quite small.

we had snow here so I think that’s the leaf problem & was really hoping it wasn’t vine weevil again, it’s nice to get advice!
The larve will be eating my plant soon then I take it?? Or will another treatment kill the terrors off?

Millymolly2012, I have never had to deal with Vine Weevils (so far), so not totally sure what cycle and treatments. Hopefully someone else will come along to let you know, but I understand it is not normally just one treatment. You may need to repeat it again.
  • Thanks Borderline
ive been doing quarterly treatments which is why I haven’t lost any plants the last 2 years so I’m puzzled how they have got the rhododendrum bit it does look like vine weevil, it’s the larvae that do most damage as they eat the roots 👊 they killed a well established pine tree a few years ago, I try not to use pesticides but there’s no other way with vine weevil, that I know of, they aren’t a problem in plants in gardens, it’s the pits cos they can take over!
    Thank you for the help

I've never had vine weevil (lucky me!) and I don't want to by the look of that.
