Still no luck, I fear they have died from the cold - they were in a builders dump bag within a builders wooden crate ( I know, it was an experiment!) but I did fleece it well this year. Originally I had just 4 plants, but took 2 out last year to see if they did better in the ground. Enormous roots but right at the bottom of the bag, seem to have sunk down over the years, so could this be the problem and the spears have to fight their way right to the top?
Don't give up hope yet Lizzie - mine have been cared for in textbook fashion and still no sign of them above ground! I have to say I do wonder if the Devon wet might be too much for them but I cling to the thought of that one little spear I saw about an inch below the surface. I covered it up so quickly I'm starting to think I imagined it!
I wish mine looked like that! Sadly I have just one tiny skinny little spear about six inches tall. I think the other 19 crowns must have perished in the wet. I did add a lot of grit underneath the soil before making the little rows for them to stand on, weeded them assiduously and gave them a lovely mulch a while back. What did I do wrong?
