Any sign of asparagus yet?

I posted about a week ago that I'd not seen any yet. Had another little firtle around in the soil yesterday and found a tiny, skinny little spear coming up through the soil. I'm so happy! It's only its first full season so we won't be feasting off it just yet, but I'm so glad it made it through that horrible wet winter :)

I've got 12 crowns that have just arrived to plant tonight and some of those have small spears on already. Looking forward to some in a couple of years already!

I put off growing asparagus for ages - wish I'd done it sooner now. One unexpected benefit is that, as I have to keep the bed well weeded, I spend time in my veg patch over the winter when I wouldn't normally venture in there :)

  • My bed went in 15 yrs ago so is well mature. No sign of any movment yet. Weed are kept down with a spray of glycosphate before the spears break surface.
