Ugh!! Good shout everyone - absolutely spot on. Night time raids of slugs and snails, (but no puppy-dog tails Blue Onion!) This has never happened before and I don’t believe it’s been THAT much wetter than previous years. I’ve just spent an hour picking them off and I’m sure I’ll have to do it for many nights to come. But how to prevent in the future?
I don't like to use slug pellets - in fact I haven't used any for a couple of years now - try to encourage hedgehogs and frogs into your garden Caromant - they both eat slugs and snails, we use wood chip on our beds but even they don't seem to be deterring the slugs and snails from eating the daffs.
We’ve got a hedgehog, and tadpoles in the pond means we have frogs - the slugs are obviously too numerous. I don’t use slug pellets either, and have to grow hostas in pots over gravel and I have given up on certain plants which always get munched. It’s the first time the daffodils have been attacked, and I guess I’ll just have to keep picking them off at night. All rather depressing.
I agree - I always thought that daffodils were pretty robust with very little problem - so I am equally disappointed - I think I had better stop feeding the hedgehogs!
That really is a lot of slugs. Last year I picked off 160 slugs at midnight in an area about 8m x 2m. And that's after trying two goes with nematodes that spring.
I thought of trying nematodes, but we have quite a big garden and it would be a lot of money to spend if it didn't work - so thank you for that info Fire.
