I wait until Spring when you can see the purple "bullets" of new shoots form. That way you can see where it's logical to split them for maximum effect.
You can lift and divide them at any time, if you're brave enough.I'd not do it in this heat and drought but if the ground is moist and the  plant is not stressed, you can do it.
All 1,000 odd plants in my polytunnel have been in there for almost 3 years now so they ALL need splitting. EEK!!!!!!

Thanks Hosta. I have always been scared to split them so I will take your advice. You have quite a job on your hands there.

  • Hi Hosta lovers. This is my Captain's Adventure. The tender leaves look exactly like the catalogue picture. But I don't like the tough, white-edged ones.  Next year, when it's a year old, if it grows like this again, will it be OK to cut the nasty ones off or will it just look stupid if I do that?

IMHO to use your own words "it'll look stupid"
Try to enjoy the contrast perhaps?

  • Thanks hostafan1. Will spend the winter anticipating what they'll all look like in Y2. (Is there a hostafan 2, 3, 4 etc? 😀)

I used two types of nematodes vine weevil and slugs. I think the soil was already too dry when I used the nematodes. They need to go into damp soil.

If you like the yellow and green patterning without the white, you'll like  Hosta 'Stained Glass'  :)

It's a gorgeous hosta ... one of my absolute favourites ... I bought mine from https://www.burncoose.co.uk/site/plants.cfm?pl_id=4654

but it's available at other places too  :)
