I wait until Spring when you can see the purple "bullets" of new shoots form. That way you can see where it's logical to split them for maximum effect. You can lift and divide them at any time, if you're brave enough.I'd not do it in this heat and drought but if the ground is moist and the plant is not stressed, you can do it. All 1,000 odd plants in my polytunnel have been in there for almost 3 years now so they ALL need splitting. EEK!!!!!!
Hi Hosta lovers. This is my Captain's Adventure. The tender leaves look exactly like the catalogue picture. But I don't like the tough, white-edged ones. Next year, when it's a year old, if it grows like this again, will it be OK to cut the nasty ones off or will it just look stupid if I do that?
