If it's any consolation Lyn we also lost one of ours - but luckily still have 3 or 4 others. We are milder I agree and the plants are alongside a wall sheltering them from the north and easterly winds.
I know they aren't very hardy in certain areas, but I was surprised to lose one this winter. They are a two year cycle for us - they sprout up and grow a foot or two in the first year and then shoot up, flower and die off in the second year. They are self seeders here.

I've still got an alive one at the front of the house, must have had extra protection from close proximity to the house wall.
There are new green shots but the top is still hollow and woodlice are in there. Anything I should be doing to help!?

Two others that I've dug up have juicy roots with one showing a few fine feeder roots
