Echium not doing well

We have an Echium that we planted last year and it's taken a beating thanks to the snow.

It is mushy in the top but there is some new leaf growth at the sides.

Trying to work out if it is a lost cause. Any thoughts?

    Lots of folks on here lost their Echium plants because of the cold snaps, if there's green, there's hope - yours look a lot healthier than most I have seen on here recently

    I'm with Mark ... I've seen much worse ....... Fingers Crossed!   :)

    Fingers crossed then! It' s the gunky middle that worries me. Would cutting the top of be madness?

    it looks to me like there are tiny side shoots coming. I'd leave well alone for a while longer.

    There are no little seedlings, whether some will shoot from last years plants I don’t know. They take three years to flower, this would have been the flowering year.

    So disappointing for you and know how you feel. Although mine are all well dead , I did dig up some seedlings last year and have over wintered them but will still have to wait until next year until flowering.

    Well, we really should learn what not to grow, and plants that need a hot dry climate isn’t suitable for here, they grow wild in the west of Cornwall, but they’ve probably lost theirs this year as they had worse weather than us.

    I remember Monty once saying, years ago, that you shouldn’t  bring a plant out of its own country, as he digs up his banana plants!
