Agree or perhaps they had already rotted/started rotting before you stored them?

That'll be it then Hosta - I watered it, probably too much. I got a freebie from St John's garden centre last week so I'll try not to make the same mistake, and perhaps I'll have a look and see if I can find another of the beautiful orange one somewhere. Annoyingly the label didn't give a specific name, just said, 'patio dahlia'!!

Too cold and wet. I start mine off indoors as my GH isn’t warm enough at this time of the year. It’s the combination of cold and wet soil.

Maybe we can help? If not the National Dahlia Society in Cornwall could.

Was it single flowered, pom pom etc? Did it have dark foliage or green?

Quick update to say that my dahlia appeared and is doing well. Now I just need to not kill it this summer,  and there's only the winter to deal with 🙂
Carmarthenshire (mild, wet, windy). Loam over shale, very slightly sloping, so free draining. Mildly acidic or neutral.

I have 9 pots of dahlias in an unheated  g/h. Planted the 3 weeks ago. One pot is poking through - just.

@Thankthecat - Ellen Huston is a favourite of mine, lovely orange flowers set off by dark foliage, about 40 cm tall. She's a really good doer too, and always grows well, so that it is easy to split off another plant when you lift them in  autumn or restart in spring. After a few years I have quite a lot of them!

Sorry @Mark56, I've only just seen your comment. I don't have any photos of it but from memory the flowers were single, a beautiful rich orange. It was very short, only about 12-18"tall. I can't remember the foliage but think it might have been green.

I did find it online when I had it in flower and it was something referred to as a 'Gallery' dahlia - someone was selling lots of them named after different artists - and I found one that matched, although I can't remember what artist it was named after. When I looked for it again earlier this year the range of Gallery dahlias available seems to be much reduced with only a few varieties and none that match the one I had :(

@Buttercupdays I'll have a look at Ellen Huston, thanks for the tip :)

On the plus side, the free one I got from my local garden centre is now poking above the compost in its pot. Thanks to @Hostafan1 I haven't overwatered it! It's going to be bright red, which will please my OH.
