I'd love to pack them in, but with over 200 feet of borders I can't afford to. I have to plant with gaps and let nature fill them in. Still waiting for nature to win 4 years after having the garden remodelled.
Close planting reduces water evaporation from the soil as well as suppressing some weeds. It distorts the plants but I generally am not able to grow anything that might be seen as a 'specimen'. They all have to lean on one another to stay upright, it gets so windy here. Any plant left out alone tends to dry up and die within a season.
