I like to see the whole plant so, with some exceptions e.g. roses, I prefer a bit of bare soil around  my plants.
What do you prefer?

Cheek by jowl ... otherwise I'd never fit them all in  ;)

Tiny garden, so I pack em in tight 😉.

I do not understand the british obsession with raking dozens of m2 of bare soil every week. Just put plants in there and the whole thing works so much better and actually looks nice.

A bare patch of soil is a home for a plant.

Someone might want to use that as their pearl of wisdom signature.

I leave a bit of space for them to be able to grow and thrive but they then cover the bare soil and end up cheek by jowl.

Veggie plants generally get more space and bare soil but they're in rows I've made "hoe" wide.

If I see bare soil in my garden, I know I have failed with a plant and it's died on me! All jam packed together - I live in a cottage and embrace the cottage-garden schema.
