Coffee Beans? Really?

Is this true you can add used coffee granules in the compost bin? If so what kind of amount are we talking, just once or twice or can you add lots? Also what are the benefits? .. thanks..

    You can put most things of vegetable origin in the compost bin. Too much of one thing is not a good idea, but mix lots of different things, eg coffee grounds, tea leaves, peelings, grass cuttings, even the contents of the vacuum cleaner.

    Well I've been putting them round my sickly Rhododendron(inherited from previous house owner in a dried out plastic pot) and she seems to have perked up a bit,I think the coffee grounds help to make the soil acid,that plus a watering of very diluted vinegar. They actually give the used grounds away in one of the services on the M5 !
    The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.

    Waitrose has a bin outside to folk to help themselves to used coffee grounds

    Caffeine has been proven to deter slugs, it was Nature a couple of years ago, and in low doses it puts slugs off plants and larger does kills them. Am not convinced how much caffeine remains in ground coffee after it has had boiling water steamed through it as caffeine is highly water soluble at that temperature.

    Sounds like an experiment!
    I concur, hence " said to " . I've not tried using them in any form.

    I've read that coffee grinds are supposedly a slug deterrent too, and a good mulch for acid lovers.
    Can't remember where... some internet blah blah?

    Never tried it, I drink tea.

    I should pick some up at Waitrose and give it a bash too. The Hostas are starting to stir.
