Pete, your post came up after mine in my inbox! As mentioned, I had found Crocus to be useful so I agree with you on that one. Looks like I may have to just carry on being less specific and just keep my fingers crossed for some sun at some point this year. Thanks everyone.
It's true. I don't think you can plan like that in a real garden. It depends on soil, weather, light and warmth, rain, pest damage, competition from other plants, visiting animals, all sorts of things.
You could start keeping a garden diary to record the weather and flowering times throughout the year in your plot j&h. Looking back at photos is good too, my tablet does a little pop-up thing which asks if I'd like to view my pics from "This day" a year ago. I can see a big difference between 2017/18 so far. Mainly due to the harsh winter we've been having, most stuff is way behind in the flowering.
The info from a diary/pics would no doubt be different year to year dependant on the weather, but would give you more accurate guidelines than generalized internet advice.
That's a really good idea because your garden will be different from other people's. It's not just big geographical distances. A sheltered garden 50yards away will be earlier than an exposed one.
See if you can get a copy of Geoff Hamilton's Radio Times Gardening Year published many years ago. It tells what's in flower on a monthly basis and much more.
Thanks Joyce. Being of a certain age, he's always been my favourite but that's one book I don't have by him. I've just managed to order it secondhand, so thank you for the recommendation.
