Ok. Never mind! Was looking forward to some magnolia blooms. Now I need to chose whether to keep the laurel and constantly chop it back (so it just nearly covers that fence panel) or try and remove it and let what I’ve planted in front of the fence flourish

  • It's definitely Magnolia grandiflora, not all evergreen magnolias leaves have brown undersides e.g. Magnolia grandiflora 'Goliath'.

Hurrah!!! What do I do with it then?! I need to control it and to outside it to flower as best it can!

having been cut back so hard, it may be a bit shy to flower for a year or two.

Thanks hosta fan. It was hacked nearly 3 years ago now but I shall be patient! I’d planted two mock oranges and a standard rose in front of the fence panel so I’ll move those and let the magnolia take over (under  planted with lavender and vanilla scented nemasia)

It's looking like a Magnolia Grandiflora. The leaves are looking smoothed edged. Prunus Laurocerasus leaf has a very fine tooth edge. If it's been cut down quite drastically around about late summer last year, you may get flowering this year, any later, unlikely. Flowering is very sporadic in this country. But, being so close to a wall, it's probably the best place for warmth and protection.

I didn't think it was laurel because the stump looks wrong but, not being familiar with Magnolias, couldn't ID that
