? Sowing Cosmos

The packet suggests sowing the seeds two to a pot.Is this necessary? Or can they be sown straight into the ground. Will the flowers be bigger and stronger if pot sown?

I have never direct sown but yes if you do decide to do in pots then I always do two per pot just in case one fails 😊

Or you could sow them into a seed tray and then transplant into another seed tray when they have 2 real leaves.

I sow into plug trays as individuals, then pot into 7 cm pots, then pinch out and pot into 6 inch pots. That gives good strong plants ready to romp away in June.
  • Than you so much for your replies. Probably best not to just scatter around on the ground then?!!!!  😁🌱🌱🌱

I always know the season has started when Cosmos gets a mention. I sowed Cosmos Cranberries and Xanthos on Saturday and they are off the heat already. Exciting times! I will pot them on that way too.

  • I usually sow cosmos in seed trays and then pot up individually into 9cm pots.  When potting up I plant the seedlings deeper than they were in the seed tray and the stalk under the soil will grow roots which seems to make a better plant.

I’ll be sowing mine next week, this year I have a propagator with grow lights which so far is proving to be of great use.

About to sow mine today .....love Cosmos.  This year I’ve got rubenza, purity and a selection of the pink/white picotee ones.

i sow in a seed tray and then prick out in a few weeks.  Like Magpie maiden, that gives me a chance to bury any leggy seedlings 🌱
