Ours is only that big because previous owners dug it for their cattle. No lining so it will evaporate over summer which means planting only to disguise the edges and murky middle. No water lilies or usual marginal suspects unfortunately.
One day, I'd like a smaller, ornamental pond where I can have such plants but it will be a while before we get to that..

Well I have a choice of two locations of a wildlife pond, one is in the main garden which will be in view from the house, which is perfect for me, but my water loving labrador will also think this is perfect for him!!!!
Or, there is an area at the far end of the garden beyond the archway that the dog can't get to, but it is out of view of the house.
You could. When we adopted our Lab at about 3 yrs old he'd never been outside except in a teeny courtyard so was frightened of everything. However he instantly took to our Rasta doggy and just followed her straight outside into our large Belgian garden where he found the pond and dived straight in. It too was unlined and dug to drain our boggy garden.
After just a few days the novelty wore off and he never went in again. Maybe yours will be the same.

Sadly I think his love for water will be too strong. He is obedient though and perhaps if we keep an eye on him when letting him out we can teach him to keep away from it?
I could always lay smooth padles tones in the pond to protect the liner from his paws, rather like a member on here did with his pond...

I could of course have ponds in both locations
