    Thanks Plant Pauper for that link. However they're usually very small plants from Parkers and I reckon for clematis especially, it's worth paying a bit more and getting bigger plants.

  • Winter cold will not kill clematis alpina or macropetala, but the winter wet will.  They will not over winter here on the mild, wet, marshland of West Lancashire, but many clematis friends in Canada grow them successfully.

    Yes I found that. In Bolton it was so difficult to keep them as it’s so cold and WET but here in Norfolk we are coldbut drier in winter.

    These are some of my clematis. From the top:
    viticella John Howells any aspect July to Sept to 10 feet.
    Herbaceous and non clinging  Carol Klein any aspect July to October 4-5 feet
    Texensis Princess Diana sunny aspect July to October
    Acropolis for growing in a tub to 4 feet high
    Rebecca a new variety May to September 6-8 feet any aspect a red clematis very outstanding colour.
    tangutica Bill Mackenzie July to October sunny aspect 10-15 feet.

  • John Howells is a stunning Viticella Group clematis, a lovely colour.

    Obviously I love the Carol Klein.

    My Belgian clematis specialist reckons the alpinas I bought from him are hardy down to -30C so I expect it was more the wet - except for 2009 which went down to -32C in my garden on January 6th.  A memorable date for the ensuing devastation to clems, roses, evergreens.............
