The lowest our forecast is saying is -2 at nights with 8  through the days.

Stupid frogs just laid another lot of spawn, we’ve already covered the first lot.

-4 or -5 max here, Ive already fleeced the Salvias just in case. Might do one of the fuchsias too.

What should we protect? Lots of plants in bud here in the se, and I'm a bit of a novice. Roses and honeysuckle both showing new buds. Also have salvias... Although they've survived the winter so far. Should i get the bubble wrap out?

Roses and honeysuckle are fully hardy, some salvias are whilst others are not. Which varieties are you growing? image

I don't think the actual thermometer readings are too bad ; the worst aspect is the wind-chill !

Working outdoors as I do you become acclimatised to it (as long as you keep moving)image .

Unfortunately our poor old plants can't move themselves and rely on us for a modicum of protection .

Next Sunday around here (E.Lincs) they're forecasting approx. -2C during the day , but with a wind chill should feel like -8C !

    Nice(!)image

Updates are now showing the expected rise in temps at the beginning of March may now not happen and instead we could get significant snowfall even in the south of the UK.

Still a long way off though, so plenty of time for it to change back to rain.

The fairly severe cold next week seems to be becoming more certain though - as has been said, the wind chill looks to be the biggest issue.

  • Has anyone cut their buddleia and group 3 clematis back yet?  I usually like to do it before the end of February but not sure now with this cold snap predicted? image

I think the timing has more to do with when the plants break dormancy than with protection, necessarily, so it probably doesn't matter if you have done it already, but then again it probably can wait if you haven't. To be honest I wouldn't do it right now, given that it's likely to get very cold, so leave well alone and hope for the best may be sensible at this point.
